New Project - Key Club Website

I’ve decided to take on another project over this spring break. I’ve been commissioned to do the design, layout and CMS of the Homestead High School Key Club website. This is a complete redesign. As of April 13, I’ve just about finished the front page. The main challenge will be integrating the design with the CMS. The CMS I chose was ModX. A fairly new entry to the CMS field.

Dilemma a la Mathematica

Recently, a mathematics teacher of mine proposed a question: if there is one, what is the  the absolute minimum of the function f(x) = 1/x on the interval [0, infinity].

The answer is simple; there is none.

When considering the definition of a global minimum, one sees that a global minimum is a point of a function where f(x) is lower than any other point on the function. Stated mathematically:

f(x*) ≤ f(x)

Where x* denotes a critical number where a global minimum occurs.

In the case of f(x) = 1/x on the interval [0, infinity], as x gets closer to infinity, x continually decreases inching closer to zero. It never gets to zero but it never stops declining.

Another way to approach this would be to use derivatives. The derivative of a function is basically a function of the slope. For a function continuous on the interval [0,infinity] as in our case to have an absolute minimum, we must have the slope of that function be zero at some point in the interval. This is because for the point to be at the minimum, there must be a place where it “turns back up” so that it stops declining – the slope goes from negative to positive briefly becoming zero. That turning point is where the slope is zero. Now, using calculus, we can find that the function of 1/x on the interval [0, infinity] has no turning point and therefore cannot have a absolute minimum.

f(x) =  1 / x

f ‘(x) = -1 / x^2

0 = -1 / x^2

0 ≠ -1

Therefore, there are no “turning” points for the function 1/x on the interval [0, infinity]. With this lack of turning points, we can assume that there are no absolute extrema.

The Curse of the Enterprising

After the persistent imploring of my primary Audience(Byron…) I have decided to update my blog. Yes, the news is astounding. As such, this post will not be of much content. In fact, if you have already started reading this post, you have wasted your time. No information will be inferred by reading this post. None. The sole purpose of the post you are currently reading is to inform you that I am writing this post. In writing this post, I am updating my post and thus satisfying any such person whom wants me to update the post.

EDIT: I just realized about a couple of minutes after writing this post that the title makes no sense. At the time of the writing, I was think about why I had not updated in such a while.
In these past few weeks, I have been burdened by all the activities of band and FBLA.

UPDATES: Made first chair wind ensemble and first chair jazz band.

Fred’s Channel - What Youtube Has Sunk to

It has been a while since I’ve explored the content youtube has to offer. Feeling bored, I decided to venture back to the video hosting site. I was greeted with a cleaner layout. That was the highlight of my trip. I looked to the most subscribed channels to see what has changed and found “fred.”

I understand why I stopped going to youtube. Fred is either hilariously autistic or deliberately cretinous. Actually, from his page it says:

A lonely 6-year-old with anger management issues, an alcoholic mom, and a dad who is in prison begins posting videos to a YouTube channel.

Well, I guess it’s the latter. The prominent video while I was on his channel was “Fred Goes Swimming.” It displays our protagonist flailing wildly in a kiddie pool.

When I stumble upon content so prestigious (most subscribers) yet so childish, it truly shows youtube’s main audience. Oh, and don’t get me started on the design of the channel.

After months of work, I present to you: HUA.

Ever wanted to buy some flowers one day? You thought about walking 3 blocks to the local flower shop, but decided the flowers were not worth the effort. Then you wondered why there weren’t any flower shops online. Then you thought of 1800flowers and went there to buy some.
Well Hua is here to fill the gap.
